Preventing Pet Heatstroke: How to Keep Your Pets Cool in Summer

As temperatures rise, so do the risks of heatstroke in pets. Dogs and cats are especially vulnerable to overheating because they don’t sweat the way humans do. Even short periods in hot environments can quickly become dangerous. Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, and lethargy. Flat-faced breeds, older pets, and those with medical conditions are particularly at risk, making it crucial to recognize symptoms early and take preventive steps.

To keep your pets safe, always provide access to fresh water and shade when outdoors. Walk dogs during cooler parts of the day, like early morning or evening, and avoid hot pavement that can burn their paws. Never leave pets in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes. Consider cooling mats, pet-safe ice treats, or indoor play during heatwaves. Prevention is key - once heatstroke sets in, it becomes a medical emergency.
